Let’s talk about the word POSTPARTUM.
Postpartum is an adjective. It defines the period of time following childbirth. The word postpartum does NOT define anyone’s mood or well being.
So a postpartum doula, supports families during their postpartum period, again, the period of time following childbirth.
Now let’s talk about postpartum depression. Postpartum depression is when a mother experiences on-going depressive symptoms during the postpartum period.
Postpartum Doula support can greatly benefit families who are experiencing any signs of postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, postpartum OCD, etc. Postpartum Doulas are trained to recognize the symptoms of Maternal Mental Health Illnesses. We can offer nonjudgemental support to these families as well as offer additional resources.
However, please DO NOT confuse the term postpartum for postpartum depression. They each have their own meaning.
And while mothers who are struggling find great value in postpartum doula support, there are also many happy families who hire postpartum doulas. You do NOT have to be struggling to reap the benefits of postpartum doula support.
Happy families hire postpartum doulas too!
